We like to believe that our world is essentially a meritocracy: work hard, and you’re going to get ahead. Unfortunately, things are far more out of our hands. At birth, there are numerous conditions that are totally out of our control, but that influence our paths through life dramatically. The biggest are the incomes and education levels of our parents. However, psychological studies are revealing another huge factor in life path: our looks. Study after study is proving that more attractive people tend to lead happier and more prosperous lives. Nowhere is this effect more pronounced than in the business world, where the hottest workers are the highest earners, and are even perceived by their coworkers as more honest and competent regardless of whether that’s true. The facts are disturbing, but there is one thing you can do as you embark on your business career: make sure you’re looking your best before that interview.
